The National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza - H5N1 at Kalapani village, Phuntshopelri geog, Samtse dzongkhag on 20th March 2018. The outbreak occurred in a layer farm that is located at India-Bhutan border towns. The birds started dying since 16 March and as of 19 March 2018, all 320 birds have died with 100% mortality. Poultry birds have also dying in the nearby farm. Following confirmation, the National Incident Command Committee (NICC) met on 21th March 2018 declared the outbreak and issued an executive order to activate Incident Operation Center (IOC) at Samtse to implement containment measures.
The rapid response team (RRT) are conducting control measures and surveillance activities in the outbreak and surveillance zone.
