The Department of Livestock, (DoL) MOAF, Bhutan recognized for “Institutionalizing Compassion” at the 10th Asia for Animals Conference, Kathmandu, Nepal, 2-5 December 2017

The 10th Asia For Animals Conference (AFA 2017) was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 2-5 December 2017. The conference was attended by over 500 participants from 50 countries and from more than 150 organizations. The theme of the conference was “Changing Human Behavior”. An eight-member delegation from Bhutan led Dr. Karma Rinzin, Chief Veterinary Officer, Animal Health Division, Department of Livestock, who are the project task force members of the National Dog Population Management and Rabies Control Project (NDPM & RCP), also attended the AFA conference. The Humane Society International hosted the 4th Project Task Force Meeting of the third phase NDPM & RCP on 1st December 2017.
During the 10th AFA Conference, the Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture & Forests, Royal Government of Bhutan was recognized for its contribution towards improving the animal welfare in the country and for taking lead in implementing the nationwide dog population management programme. The Department of Livestock and the Humane Society International embarked on a joint project to reduce and to address increasing free-roaming dogs in Bhutan. In the nine years of successful collaboration since 2009, more than 70,000 dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated against rabies. Bhutan has also made significant achievements in technical capacity in areas of dog population management and animal welfare.
According to the organizers of AFA 2017, the National Dog Population Management and Rabies Control Project is a unique example of successful collaboration between a Government organization and an animal welfare organization. In recognition of the efforts put in for Dog Population Management and for setting exemplary animal welfare standards, the Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Royal Government of Bhutan was awarded the prestigious award for “Institutionalizing Compassion”. Of the number of awards conferred at the 10th AFA conference, Department of Livestock was the only Government Organization receiving such an award.
